History

A Rich Tapestry: The History of Petersham & Milton Mansion

While Petersham is perfectly connected for the modern professional, its unique character comes from its deep roots.
Long before European settlement, this land was home to the Cadigal clan of the Eora Nation. Following British settlement, the area was granted to major figures including Major Francis Grose in the late 18th century, who named the area “Petersham” after his birthplace in Surrey, England.
By the late 19th century, Petersham evolved into a premier residential suburb for Sydney’s elite, sparking a boom in grand Victorian architecture. It was during this golden era that the magnificent structure of Milton Mansion was built.
In the mid-to-late 20th century, a wave of Portuguese migration transformed the suburb into the vibrant “Little Portugal” we love today. By choosing Milton Mansion, you become a part of this rich, ongoing story.
