From Milton to the Greenway
est. 1888 — Present
Deep historical digging into 29 Croydon Street, Petersham has uncovered a fascinating timeline tracking its journey from a grand 19th-century family estate to an inner-west residential hub. Here is everything the archives, council records, and real estate history reveal about the property.
Ride or Walk the Greenway and Grab a Coffee Along the
Way!
Explore Sydney’s most vibrant ecological and active transport corridor, just minutes from Milton’s doorstep.
One of the Inner West’s best-kept secrets is the GreenWay—a spectacular 5.8-kilometre environmental and active transport corridor that weaves its way through the heart of our local neighborhoods. Following the route of the Inner West Light Rail and the historic Hawthorne Canal, the GreenWay is a lush, off-road haven for cyclists, walkers, and nature lovers.
Whether you’re looking for a leisurely morning stroll under the tree canopy, a safe cycle route to the harbor, or a tour of local street art and hidden cafes, the GreenWay offers an amazing slice of local life.
The GreenWay acts as a green spine connecting two of Sydney’s beautiful waterways:
Head North: The path takes you all the way to Iron Cove (Haberfield/Leichhardt), where you can connect directly to the famous 7km “Bay Run” loop around the harbor.
Head South: The path winds down to the Cooks River (Dulwich Hill/Earlwood), opening up miles of peaceful riverside cycling tracks.
The GreenWay is easily accessible from Milton (29 Croydon Street), making it the perfect starting point for a weekend adventure. The closest major entry point is near the Lewisham West Light Rail Stop, about a 20-minute walk or a flat, 5-to-7-minute cycle away.
The Route (Walk or Cycle):
Head South: Turn left out of Milton’s front gate and head down Croydon Street toward the railway line.
Turn West: Turn right onto Trafalgar Street (which runs parallel to the train line).
Follow the Rail Corridor: Continue straight along Trafalgar Street, which turns into Railway Terrace as you pass Petersham Station and head into Lewisham.
Join the Path: Just past Lewisham train station, you will reach Hudson Street / Lewisham West Light Rail stop. Here, you will see the signposted entrance to the GreenWay path intersecting the road.
For Waterfront & Coffee (Turn Right / North): Cycle north alongside the Hawthorne Canal. This route features flat, wide paths, native bushcare sites, and vibrant street art under the bridges. It leads directly to Iron Cove, passing local favorites like Cafe Bones (a famous dog-friendly outdoor cafe) at Richard Murden Reserve.
For River Views (Turn Left / South): Head south through the leafy pockets of Dulwich Hill towards the Cooks River, winding through peaceful parks and the historic Waratah Mills precinct.
Guest Tip: Don’t have a bike? Sydney’s bike-share network (like Lime or Beam e-bikes) frequently have bikes parked around Petersham Station and the Lewisham West light rail stop, making it incredibly easy to jump on a bike and explore the GreenWay for the afternoon
